Missoula International School’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Teams Win BIG at the Montana State FLL Championship
Missoula International School’s 2016/17 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams participated in the Montana State FLL Championship tournament on Saturday, January 28, 2017, on the campus of Montana State University in Bozeman. A record seventy-three teams competed at the event this year. Teams participated in three categories: the Robot Game, the Research Project, and the FLL Core Values which focus on teamwork, good sportsmanship, and friendly competition.
This year’s FLL challenge theme was “Animal Allies,” and teams from 88 countries around the world worked to come up with innovative solutions to improve human and animal interactions. One of the MIS teams, the BeeBots, researched honey bees and came up with their innovative solution: “The Pollination Station.” Similar to a charging station for an electric car, the “Pollination Station” is a charging station for bees; it is a vertical container garden planted with native species to attract bees and other pollinators to the diverse pollen sources they need to survive. MIS’s second team, the AlphaBots, researched wolves and developed a two-unit, drone, predator deterrent system designed to first identify wolves on ranches with a high flying drone unit and then deploy a ground-level drone unit to haze the predator away from livestock.
The teams were judged on robot design and programming; teamwork skills; and their research project presentation. Teams also participated in three robot game rounds during which their autonomous robot must complete as many missions as possible in each 2 ½ minute scoring round.
AlphaBots was awarded 1st Place for Mechanical Design. This award recognizes a team that designs and develops a mechanically sound robot that is durable, efficient and highly capable of performing challenge missions. BeeBots was awarded the 2nd Place Overall Champion’s Award. This award recognizes a team that embodies the FIRST LEGO League experience, by embracing the FLL Core Values while achieving excellence and innovation in both the Robot Game and Project.
With this recognition, the BeeBots also received an invitation to compete at the 2017 North American Open FLL tournament at LEGOLAND in Carlsbad, CA this May. The BeeBots will be one of approximately 80 international teams participating at the NA Open, representing some of the 33,000-plus teams who participated in more than 1,400 qualifying and championship tournaments worldwide this past season. The team will be representing both MIS and Montana at the NA Open. For more information on FIRST LEGO League go to: http://www.firstlegoleague.org
